Winter Shutdown dates for 2020-21

Williams staff and faculty,

I’m pleased to inform you that Senior Staff and I are lengthening the college’s winter shutdown on a one-time basis for this year. Assuming there are no events that require a late change of plans, shutdown will begin on Monday, December 21, 2020, and continue through the end of the day on Monday, January 4, 2021, returning to normal operations on Tuesday, January 5.

For those new to Williams, winter shutdown is just what it sounds like: the college closes as fully as possible. Staff are entitled to the time off without use of vacation days. No meetings or events are scheduled, and, while there are no hard rules, we’re all discouraged from working or creating work for our colleagues. It’s a chance to relax, spend time with loved ones, enjoy the season and do whatever it is that gives you joy.

Because some students will remain on campus through this December and January, a few more staff will report to work during the shutdown than usual. If you’re among them, please know how grateful my colleagues and I are to you for your extra commitment.

During a year when the pandemic will make it very hard for many of us to be with extended family, you’re all still part of the Williams family. You’ve each given so much of yourselves to the college and our students. Please accept the additional time off as just one expression of our ongoing gratitude.

Maud
