Dean of the College Appointment

To the Williams Community

It’s wonderful to be able to report that, in consultation with the Faculty Steering Committee, I have offered the position of Dean of the College to Sarah Bolton of the Physics Department and she has accepted.

Sarah will take on primary responsibility for all aspects of student life on July 1, when Karen Merrill ends her very productive term as Dean to return to fulltime teaching and research in the History Department.

Sarah is experienced in many facets of the College’s life. A highly regarded teacher, she has been honored for her excellence in mentoring students, and her own research has been supported by the NSF. In addition to chairing her department, her extensive experience with College governance includes service on the Faculty Steering Committee (including as chair), Committee on Educational Policy, Faculty Review Panel, Ad Hoc Committee on Grade Inflation, Council of Williams College Women, and Advisory Committee on Women’s and Gender Studies.

The conversations I’ve had with her have more than confirmed her widespread reputation as the kind of experienced, thoughtful, and caring person likely to serve the community well in this position.

She and Karen will work out the smoothest possible transition. I hope you will join me in thanking Karen for the great work she has done and Sarah for her willingness to take on these responsibilities.

Best wishes,
Adam Falk
President
