It is my sad duty to inform you of the passing of Edgar “Skeeter” Lewis, a longtime member of our custodial team. We recently learned that Skeeter passed away earlier this month at Massachusetts General Hospital. The funeral will be held tomorrow, Tuesday, November 27, in North Adams. Details are provided below.
Skeeter was born in North Adams and graduated from Mt. Greylock High School. Trained as a stonemason, he joined the Williams staff in 2001 and worked here as a custodian until 2013. In addition, he enthusiastically volunteered as an assistant varsity basketball coach at Mount Greylock and was an avid ice fisher.
“Skeeter was hard working and had a great personality,” recalls Ed Bourdon, supervisor of custodial services. “His willingness to help others was his strong point. He always volunteered for overtime, which was a great help in covering all the special functions around campus. He was generous to a fault and loved fishing, animals and attending college sporting events.”
Skeeter’s obituary notes that he was surrounded by his loved ones at the time of his death. He was predeceased by his parents, Graham and Mildred Lewis, and brother, David. Survivors include his wife, Gwen Lewis; two daughters, Andrea Lewis and Melissa (Lewis) Poirot; and four grandchildren, Gavin, Sierra, Octavia and Jaxon; along with his siblings, Elizabeth Knapp, Debra Denamen, Edith Hall, Charles Hall and Chet Lewis, who is also a member of the Williams custodial team, several nieces and nephews and many friends.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow (Tuesday) at the Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals in North Adams. Burial will follow in Williamstown’s Eastlawn Cemetery, followed by a celebration of Skeeter’s life at the American Legion post in North Adams. Calling hours will be 9–11 a.m. tomorrow at the funeral home. The family welcomes memorial donations via the Flynn & Dagnoli funeral home.
