The Death of Professor Emerita Karen Kwitter

Williams colleagues,

In sadness, I write with news that Karen Kwitter, Ebenezer Fitch Professor of Astronomy, Emerita, passed away on Monday, peacefully and surrounded by her loved ones.

A memorial ceremony will be held at the Williams College Cemetery tomorrow, Thursday, August 22, at 10 AM. All are welcome, and casual attire is encouraged. The family will also stream the ceremony on Zoom for those unable to attend in person. Please know that audio quality may be limited due to the outdoor setting.

In keeping with Jewish tradition, the family welcomes friends, colleagues and students who wish to join them as they sit shiva at their home in Williamstown, from 2 to 6 PM on Thursday, August 22, and 1-5 PM on Friday the 23rd [NB: The address was provided in the campus email, but has been omitted here for privacy purposes].

I will send a full commemoration of Karen this fall. In the meantime, our thoughts go out to her husband, Senior Lecturer in Astronomy, Emeritus, Steve Souza, as well as to all of Steve and Karen’s loved ones, colleagues and students, in this time of loss.
