Williams faculty, students and staff,
I write, with sadness, to let you know that Jay Pasachoff, Field Memorial Professor of Astronomy, Director of the Hopkins Observatory and Chair of the Astronomy Department, died this morning.
Jay joined Williams in 1972 and taught here for more than 50 years. He was influential in his field and a teacher and mentor to generations of students and alumni. His passing is a loss to them and to his colleagues, including those in Astronomy and Physics, as well as to his wife, Naomi, and their entire family.
I will send a fuller remembrance in the coming days. Meanwhile, I hope you will all join me in honoring Jay’s legacy, and in keeping Naomi and Jay’s family and friends in your hearts.
Students currently enrolled in Professor Pasachoff’s classes, you will receive an email momentarily from Dean of the College Gretchen Long.
